About Us

Gnarwhal was named somewhere on Highway 1.

Somewhere between the redwoods and the sea, between a roadside diner and a long stretch of silence. We were younger then, half-lost, half-searching, full of ideas that didn’t yet have form. The name came out of a conversation about contradictions. About what it means to be wild and gentle. Curious and grounded. A narwhal that surfs. A joke, at first. But it stayed with us.

When we came back to Los Angeles, we started roasting coffee in a garage. A small, salty space that smelled like ocean air and hard work. There was no blueprint—just a belief that something beautiful could be built slowly, quietly, and with care.

We opened our doors on the corner of Main & Marine with that same spirit.

We source regenerative, organic coffee, matcha, and tea from people who live their craft with intention and care. We’re not here to impress you. We’re here to offer something real. Something warm. Something that reminds you to slow down for a moment, even if it’s just one.

Gnarwhal is a nod to that road trip. To not knowing and to starting anyway.

And to building a place that never forgets where it began.

Our Coffee

Thanks to our collaboration with our sister brand, Sunnyday, at Gnarwhal, coffee begins long before the first pour. It starts in living soil—on farms where regeneration isn’t a trend, but a commitment.

We source only single origin coffees, grown organically and with deep care for the ecosystems they come from. Every batch is lab tested for mold, pesticides, and heavy metals—because what you put in your body should nourish, not compromise.

It may not be the cheapest cup you’ll find, but you’re not just buying coffee—you’re investing in farmers earning livable wages, in agricultural systems that give more than they take, and in a product that’s as clean as it is delicious.

No blends or shortcuts. No over-roasted cover-ups. Just thoughtful sourcing, careful roasting, and a daily ritual you can feel good about.
